A search is underway for an elderly man who went missing after falling from a cruise ship in the waters east of Sydney.
The Associated Press reported that Australian Maritime Safety Authority spokesman, Mel Larsen said the 84-year-old man went overboard around 9 p.m. local time on Monday. The ship was returning to Water Bay after a 13-day trip from New Zealand.
Skynews.com.au noted that Larsen also said the man fell from the Sun Princess cruise ship in rough conditions.
"Given his age and the conditions we think the chances of survivability are low," he said.
In a statement, Princess Cruises said that crew members conducted a thorough search of the ship in an effort to locate the man.
Video surveillance later showed that the victim did indeed fall overboard and confirmed the time in which he did.
The Sun Princess was built in 1995 and offers cruises along the coast of Australia as well as the South Pacific. It will soon be expanding its Japanese cruise program sailing from Otaru, Hokkaido, and Kobe.
