While Matt Damon has worked for a number of high-profile directors, from Terry Gilliam to Steven Spielberg, one the Good Will Hunting star/writer hasn't collaborated with yet is Alexander Payne (Nebraska, The Descendants). But that will soon change, as Damon has just signed on to Payne's latest film, the long-gestured Downsizing.

Deadline reported on the casting development for the new 20th Century Fox film. While this will take Damon out of Zhang Yimou's latest film The Great Wall, Damon will get the chance to work on the quickly-developing new movie from Payne.

Scripted by Payne and Jim Taylor, the Oscar-winning writing team behind 2004's Sideways, Downsizing is a social satire where a guy realizes he'd have a better life if he just shrank himself. No other details are known at the moment. Sounds a little more sci-fi than your average Payne film, but the director seems more interested of late in changing up his formula.

This is not the next job Damon has at the moment, as he is shooting Kenneth Lonergan's Manchester-By-The-Sea next, then set to star in Ridley Scott's The Martian and he is also set to star in a new Bourne movie at some point or another with Paul Greengrass. It's not clear where in the timeline Downsizing falls for Damon. It could be in between The Martian and the new Bourne, or after the new action sequel. Either way, expect to see in production sometime next year.
