Since Sony’s Spider-Man franchise is going nowhere fast, Andrew Garfield has to keep busy. He might just get a chance to work with Mel Gibson for his next project.
Gibson has been picked to direct Hacksaw Ridge, a World War II drama about Private First Class Desmond T. Doss. While Doss refused to fire a weapon, he still saved 75 men at Okinawa. He was wounded by a grenade and hit by a sniper, but survived. He was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, two Bronze Stars and three Purple Hearts.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Garfield is being considered for the role of Doss.
Hacksaw is being produced by Bill Mechanic, David Permut, Terry Benedict and Steve Longi, reports Deadline. The project, which was originally at Disney, is now at Walden Media.
If Gibson directs, it will be his first effort since Apocalypto in 2006. He won Oscars for Braveheart, which was written with Robert Schenkkan, who is also working on Hacksaw.
Gibson was last seen in front of the camera in The Expendables 3 and just finished Blood Father. Garfield recently made 99 Homes, which earned good reviews at the Toronto Film Festival.
