Residents of a New Hampshire neighborhood were forced to evacuate their homes overnight during a standoff in which a SWAT team was called in to negotiate with a gunman.

CBS Boston noted that officers responded to a call about a deceased female found on a bridge at 11 p.m. Saturday. A short time later, authorities arrived at a home in Nashua where a man with several firearms locked himself inside a residence and would not come outside.

A SWAT team was called to the scene in an effort to get the male to surrender. They started going door-to-door asking some residents to leave their homes and others to remain inside for their safety.

The Boston Globe reported that around 7:30 a.m. officers entered the man’s home and found him dead with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. SWAT team members said they did not discharge their weapons during the standoff.

“Based on the investigation so far, it appears that the deceased male killed the female who was discovered on the Baldwin Street Bridge and then killed himself,” Attorney General Joseph Foster said in a statement.

Law enforcement officials believe the pair were in a long-term relationship together. At this time, the investigation is being called an apparent murder-suicide.
