Supernatural really knows how to please their fans with this show-stopping musical episode. The show begins with a high school stage, and what play has the drama chosen to put on? A musical version of the Supernatural books, which the director, Marie, has taken some artistic liberties with. After yelling at the cast for not putting 100% into their performances, the drama teacher decides the play should be cancelled and plans to tell the principal that in the morning. Of course, she’s not able to do that because she’s grabbed up by some tree-like monster. Ironically, this happens right after she asks where the truth is in Supernatural.

We take a quick trip through all of the show’s previous title cards (which was surely a tip of the hat to how long the show has lasted) before finding Dean doing what Dean does best; fixing up the Impala. Sam comes out to join him and is informed by his big brother that he may have a case for them. While Sam may not be too sure of going out to hunt, at least until Dean is back to normal, Dean persists saying that hunting is the only normal he knows. So they head to the all girls high school to find out what happened to the drama teacher.

The boys walk in as Bobby and Cas are practicing their iconic lines and then before they can process what they’ve walked into act one starts and we are graced with the first song of the episode. Female Dean is singing about the very beginning of Supernatural where Yellow Eyes killed their mother and cursed Sam.

At the end of the song the boys are approached by Marie and the stage manager Maeve. They introduce themselves as FBI Agent’s Smith and Smith before asking about the disappearance of the drama teacher, Mrs. Chandler. Though Dean is a little too distracted by how horrified he is by this musical.

The Winchester’s split up; Dean heading to Mrs. Chandler’s liquor filled office while Sam gets the behind the scenes tour. The boys come up short on clues, but they do get a behind the scenes look at all the Sam and Dean subtext, and everyone’s favorite Destiel. Sorry, Sam, as much as you wish it was Samstiel, it’s just not gonna happen.

So without any clues to go on, the boys decide this isn’t a case and head out. Of course, before they can leave town, Maggie, who plays Sam, decides to quit the play and go to the principal to report Marie’s behavior. The same tree-like monster scoops the poor girl up, and Marie see’s the whole thing.
So the brothers come right back and Marie tells them what she saw. She doesn’t think they’ll believe her, but they decide to come forward and be honest about who they are, Sam and Dean Winchester, stars of the Supernatural books. The girls laugh it off, saying they are too old to be the Winchester’s and they’re more like Rufus and Bobby.

So the girl’s agree that monsters are real, and that the boys are hunters, just not their favorite monster-hunting duo, and help them solve the case. Sam believes the scarecrow is a Tulpa, a monster who is created by focused energy or an idea. They burn the scarecrow they think is manifesting the Tulpa but soon realize that it is instead the goddess Calliope, who is associated with the purple flower they keep finding at the crime scenes. Calliope is manifesting as the scarecrow, because she makes sure the author’s vision is realized. Once it is she can eat the author.

With this information out there, they realize the only way to find the goddess is to let the play go on. So Marie throws on her Sam wig and rounds up the rest of the cast to get the show going. During the show Sam and Dean hang out backstage to keep an eye out for the scarecrow. However, Sam was not prepared and got snatched up by the scarecrow and ends up face to face with Calliope.

In the middle of one of the shows catchy songs, the scarecrow shows up and an on stage fight ensues. Meanwhile Sam is attempting to fight Calliope with backup from Maggie and Mrs. Chandler. Sam stabs Calliope just as Marie stabs the scarecrow on stage. The scarecrow explodes, leaving those viewers in the front row completely covered in purple goo (Hats off to that guy that actually put the poncho on.) The crowd is so impressed that they give the play a standing ovation.

With the goddess taken care of, the brother’s go to head, but not before Marie can give Dean the fake Samulet. He doesn’t want to take it, but she tells him to just accept it, jerk. Dean immediately goes to his “bitch” response before he realized he wasn’t talking to the real Sam, but Marie just smiles.

And before we leave the school for good, we get to hear the casts’ rendition of “Carry On My Wayward Son,” which was stunningly beautiful. Also a big shout out to whoever decided to put Adam in the play and give a nice little reminder to the brothers that Adam is still locked in the cage.

Once the brother’s are on the road, we find out someone claimed the ticket set aside for the book’s publisher. And guess who claimed it? Chuck! I may have been a little too giddy when I saw him on my television screen.

So what did Chuck think of Marie’s play? Well, in Chuck’s words, “Not bad.”
