While Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 scored the biggest opening of the year so far, the film fell far short of Catching Fire and even the first movie in the series.
Mockingjay I only grossed $123 million, according to estimates at Rentrak. That’s much lower than Catching Fire, which grossed $158.1 million last year. The Hunger Games opened to $152.5 million in 2012.
Overseas, Mockingjay did much better, making $152 million from foreign markets. That means after just one weekend, the film is up to $275 million globally.
The good news for Lionsgate is that its younger audience has a long Thanksgiving weekend, which will be huge for the movie. Its only new competition for the holiday weekend is Horrible Bosses 2 and DreamWorks Animation’s Penguins of Madagascar.
Disney’s Big Hero 6 added $20.1 million, bringing its domestic total to $135.7 million. Internationally, the film has made $49.5 million, so its global total is up to $185.2 million.
While Paramount and Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar hasn’t been doing as well as hoped domestically, the film got a shot in the arm from foreign audiences. The film, which Warner Bros. is releasing overseas, made $70 million overseas this weekend, bringing its international total to $450 million.
Interstellar only made $15.1 million this weekend domestically, bringing its total here to $120.6 million.
Dumb and Dumber To took a huge hit in weekend two, only making $13.8 million. Still, its $57.4 million total after 10 days is decent.
Gone Girl scored another week in the Top 5, adding $2.8 million. The dark David Fincher thriller is up to $156.8 million.
