It's hard to imagine that the reason you receive a ticket is for failing to yield to Donald Duck, but that is exactly what happened to 130 drivers in New Jersey on Halloween.
In an undercover operation, a police officer dressed as Donald Duck tried crossing a busy street using the crosswalk. Legally, drivers are supposed to yield for any pedestrians trying to cross the street but most drivers simply honked at the costumed man or continued to drive even after the man had started crossing the street.
Drivers that were pulled over received two points on their license and were ticketed for $230. Many of the drivers feel that the stunt was completely unfair and plan on challenging the ticket in court.
"This duck kept going toward the car, going back, going toward, going back, going on the curb, going off the curb.I thought this was some crazy guy on Halloween. Then they just told me that I was getting a ticket because I didn’t stop for a pedestrian," New Jersey resident Karen Haigh told WABC. "It was a crazy, it was a duck. It was a huge duck! It was scary. I’m a woman. It scared me. If it was a normal person or even a cop dressed as a normal person, I would have stopped."
Fort Lee Police Chief Bendul defended his unit's actions claiming that the tactic has been effective in reducing the number of pedestrians hit in a crosswalk which has been a problem in the city in recent years.
According to New Jersey Law, the stunt technically cannot be considered entrapment since police officers did not actually encourage the drivers to break the law.
