A wearable device called Onyx is about to make Star Trek fans’ dreams come true.
A startup company from San Francisco called OnBeep had revealed the communications technology on Wednesday, according to Wired. Onyx is wireless, attaching to a person’s shirt and working with their cell phone to communicate with acquaintances from a distance. The cost for Onyx is $99.
“We want to provide something that’s heads up and in the moment rather having to figure out which app you’re in and looking down at the screen,” co-founder and CEO of OnBeep Jesse Robbins told Forbes. He said that the device, where users only have to press a button to talk, will make vocal communication much smoother than having to load an app on a smartphone.
Forbes reported that there is an Onyx companion app for smartphones, where users can organize their contacts for the device in certain groups and locate them. Another app released later for the device will include other features as well.
