Taylor Swift might have a new music subscription service to feud with. Google’s YouTube announced Music Key, its own ad-free music streaming service, on Wednesday.
The overhaul of the site’s Music Mix, a section devoted to just the music videos and tracks posted on the site. As the Associated Press notes, this aspect of today’s overhaul is available for free, even to non-subscribers, to help listeners find their favorite music easier.
Aside from just removing ads, the subscription service gives users access to their music on the go in a mobile app. This will also allow users to pay their music without an Internet connection.
Music Key’s services will cost about as much as Google’s other streaming service through its Android Play store. After the first six months for free, users will be charged $8 per month for the first few months. It will then go up to $10 a month. That’s also what Apple’s Beats music and Spotify charge for their premium services.
A YouTube subscription service has been in the rumor mill since October 2013 and its launch is just part of the site’s 10th anniversary celebration. It is also part of Google’s ongoing struggle to get more money out of YouTube, which it bought for $1.76 billion in 2006.
