The death toll from the ferry that caught fire in the Adriatic Sea has now reached five and rescue efforts are underway for dozens of others still trapped on board.

CNN reported that on Sunday the Norman Atlantic caught fire while traveling between the Greek port of Igoumenitsa and the Italian port of Ancona.

The ferry was carrying a total of 478 passengers and 200 vehicles. More than 400 of those passengers have already been rescued. Rescue operations for the passengers remaining on board were halted Sunday because of rough seas.

One storm was moving out as another was moving in so those still aboard overnight were given thermal blankets and found places to wait where they would be protected from the elements.

Reuters noted that many of those rescued were airlifted to southern Italy and during a news conference Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi said that all rescue efforts would be completed Monday.

The cause of the blaze has not yet been determined.
