A new study has suggested the HIV is decreasing in its ability to turn into full-blown AIDS.
According to Reuters, the study was done on over 2,000 in the country of Africa and the research done by scientists showed that a form of HIV that is not as severe may end up leading to fewer than no cases of AIDS.
Professor Philip Goulder at Oxford University said, “Overall we are bringing down the ability of HIV to cause AIDS so quickly.” However, he also pointed out that HIV is still a potent virus and individuals need to be careful not to get it.
To do their research, scientisits examined the interaction between both the virus and the natural response our immune system has that could either allow the virus to decrease in its potency or whether it would cause more disease.
They also looked at how the rapidity of the virus responded to the use of medication to fight AIDS. They discovered that treating the sickest HIV patients allowed for variations of HIV that did not replicate as quickly to accelerate.
CBS News reported that the study still has limitations since the study was done in only two countries and that mathematical models were used to focus on the evolution of HIV.
Goulder suggested that for some people, viruses can evolve in such a way to make them be less sick as time goes on. Plus, it can also be suggested by the researchers that thanks to powerful drugs used to treat HIV, this would cause the virus to lose its destructiveness.
