Yahoo reported that Pine recently opened up about the film during a press conference for his current film Into The Woods and said that it was low box office sales that killed the chance at a sequel.

Pine said that the film was one of his deepest regrets. “That’s one of my deep regrets, that we didn’t totally get that right. It’s a great franchise, and if it’s not me, then I hope it gets a fifth life at this point. It’s just great. I love the spy genre. I hope it’s done again and with a great story."

Recruit only earned $50.6 million in the U.S. and worldwide made $135.5 million. The production budget for the film was estimated at around $60 million.

"I don’t think it made enough money for that to happen,” said Pine.

The Into The Woods star also opened up about his popular sci-fi franchise Star Trek. The third movie will be helmed by Justin Lin and is expected to be released on July 8, 2016, The Global Dispatch added. Pine said that he is looking forward to being back with his friends and to be a part of the Star Trek universe once again.

"I want to work with my friends. We have such a great time together. I can’t wait to see what ridiculousness they throw us into. But above and beyond anything, they’re just a great bunch. We laugh a lot," Pine explained.
