Dwayne Johnson is getting plenty of film roles these days, with a recent role in voice work.
Johnson will play the voice of Maui, a demigod, in Disney’s new animated film Moana, according to Variety. While Maui is reported as a protagonist, he is also part of Hawaiian legend, where he brought the Hawaiian islands up from the ocean, among other legends.
Empire explained that the story centers around a teenager named Moana, who was born in the old world of Oceania. Moana will go on an adventure to complete a journey attempted by her ancestors to find a legendary island. She will come across Maui, as well as face monsters and obstacles in order to complete her journey.
Variety reported that Johnson has many roles he’s either completed or will film. He will be in Furious 7 and San Andreas, both coming out next year. He will play Black Adam in the upcoming DC superhero film Shazam as well. John Musker and Rob Clements, who worked on other Disney animated films including The Little Mermaid and Aladdin, will work as co-directors for Moana, which is set for a 2016 release.
