Authorities have said that a police officer was shot and killed in Florida early Sunday morning.

The Associated Press noted that the news was confirmed through a statement from the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.

The statement said that Officer Charles Kondek, 45, was fatally shot in Tarpon Springs, about 30 miles northwest of Tampa, while responding to a service call around 2 a.m.

Police have a suspect in custody, but have not yet released that person’s identity.

As previously reported, Kondek’s death comes one day after a gunman killed two police officers in New York City before turning the gun on himself a short time later. Law enforcement officials said that shooter indicted via social media that he could possibly seek revenge on the NYPD in retaliation for the killing of Eric Garner and other unarmed black men.

Kondek was a member of the NYPD before joining the force in Florida. He leaves behind five children.

No motive for the shooting has been provided by the department at this time.
