Health officials in California and Virginia have said that three people died recently from influenza.
The Los Angeles Times reported that one of the victims was an elderly woman in Pomona Valley, who also suffered from underlying medical conditions.
The Associated Press noted that the other two victims were both from eastern Virginia and both pre-school aged students. Their deaths were reported to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta on Monday.
Flu activity in both states has increased in recent weeks. The young and elderly, especially those with preexisting medical conditions, are most at risk for developing influenza-related complications.
"It's not too late to get your flu vaccination," interim county health officer Dr. Jeffrey Gunzenhauser said. "While we may not be able to predict the severity of flu this season, there are indications that it may get worse."
The best way to protect yourself against the virus is to get a flu shot and wash your hands frequently to prevent the spread of germs.
