Hollywood is taking this weekend off, since apparently all that Thanksgiving turkey and Black Friday shopping was too much. That means that Lionsgate’s The hunger GameS: Mockingjay - Part I is likely to secure a third weekend at No. 1.
While Mockingjay started off slow late last month, the film has picked up and grossed $82.7 million over the five-day Thanksgiving holiday. While Horrible Bosses 2 and Penguins of Madagascar opened last weekend, it was clear that audiences still wanted to see Katniss Everdeen in action.
It is likely that Mockingjay will take a major drop this weekend, without the benefit of an extended holiday. Box Office Mojo predicts a $20 million weekend for the film.
Penguins will likely take a 50 percent tumble, which would put it at $12.5 million in its second weekend. DreamWorks Animation desperately needs the movie to be a hit in the long term, but its close release to Disney’s Big Hero 6 is impeding it. That movie is expected to make around $8 million.
Like Big Hero 6, christopher Nolan’s Interstellar also did well over Thanksgiving. Entertainment Weekly predicts a $7.9 million weekend for the film. Considering that audiences have decided that it must be seen on a big screen, it’s not too surprising that the film has stuck around as long as Big Hero 6.
Horrible Bosses 2 was big disappointment over Thanksgiving and its poor run will continue into weekend two. It will be lucky to pass $6 million this weekend.
Foc is releasing the micro-budget horror movie The Pyramid in 589 theaters. It has no star power and little marketing behind it, so if it makes $2 million, it would be surprising.
