The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part I completely overshadowed the new films hitting the box office this weekend, as expected. But Hollywood was thrown a curveball when the two new movies of the weekend were big disappointments.

Mockingjay I kicked off the holiday with a great $11.1 million on Thanksgiving Day. By the end of the five-day weekend, the film had grossed $82.7 million, the third-best Thanksgiving holiday ever. Over the regular three-day weekend, the film made $56.9 million, according to Rentrak estimates.

However, as The Hollywood Reporter notes, the film is still far behind Catching Fire. Last year, Catching Fire grossed a stunning $110 million over Thanksgiving. Frozen holds the second-best Thanksgiving mark with $93 million.

Mockingjay I has made $480 million worldwide and $225.7 million in North America.

Penguins of Madagascar finished in second place, but Jeffrey Katzenberg’s DreamWorks Animation and distributor Fox have to be incredibly disappointed. The film only made $36 million over the holiday ($25.8 million over the three-day weekend). It did earn an A- CinemaScore grade, so perhaps world of mouth will help, but it’s not looking good for the $135 million movie.

At least it made $33 million in China. Overall, Penguins’ international total is at $99 million.

Disney’s Big Hero 6 also siphoned off some of Penguins’ potential audience. In its fourth weekend, the film added $26 million ($18.8 million over the weekend). It is now up to $224.1 million worldwide.

Horrible Bosses 2 from Warner Bros. and New Line was a major disappointment. The film opened on Wednesday, but that didn’t help. It only made $23 million over the holiday in total ($15.7 million over the weekend).

Interstellar rounded out the Top 5 with $22 million over the holiday ($15.8 million over the three-day weekend). Dumb and Dumber To only added $11.6 million.
