Jonathan Frakes, who played Commander Riker on Star Trek: The Next Generation, says that he does want to direct Star Trek 3, which currently has an empty director’s chair.
Over the weekend, it was reported that Roberto Orci will no longer direct the third Trek movie in J.J. Abrams’ rebooted universe. Orci has never directed a film before and because fans didn’t really like his script for Star Trek Into Darkness, many were happy that he left.
Fans have their own ideas on who should direct and some want to see Frakes step in so badly that they’ve begun a Bring In Riker Facebook page.
Unlike Orci, Frakes has actually directed films. He made the best Next Generation movie, First Contact, and also Insurrection. In addition, he’s an accomplished TV director, even recently doing an episode of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD. However, he hasn’t directed a feature film since Thunderbirds in 2004.
Thankfully for fans, if he is asked, Frakes would gladly say yes. “I'm all over it. I'm all over it,” he told KOMO News about the social media campaign. “I would love that job.”
Frakes later added, “I say, unabashedly, I'd be great at it and would love to do it.”
Frakes was incredibly excited about the idea, adding, “I'm trying to keep the lid on how excited I am about the possibility, knowing it's such a long shot. But there's nothing I would like better.”
Unfortunately, Frakes is dreaming as much as fans are. It would be really surprising if he gets the job. But it sure would be cool.
