Two New York City cops were shot and killed while sitting in their patrol car, where they seemed to be targeted in an anti-cop shooting.

USA Today reported the two officers, Wenjin Liu and Raphael Ramos, died in an “execution-style” shooting. The city’s Police Commissioner, William J. Bratton, said the two men “were, quite simply, assassinated, targeted for their uniform and the responsibility they embraced. Both were ambushed and murder.”

The Commissioner also revealed the suspect shot the men after approaching the police car from the passenger’s side. He made several shots and the cops “never had an opportunity to draw their weapons.”

ABC News reported that the men were in Brooklyn when the shooting occurred around 3 pm.

The suspect in the shooting was identified as Ismayyil Brinsley, who made his way to the entrance of the subway as police were pursuing him. He then killed himself once he reached the subway platform.

It has also been reported that Brinsley may have shot an ex-girlfriend Saturday morning in Baltimore before using her Instagram account to post anti-police sentiments.
