While it was revealed yesterday Christopher Nolan was approached by Warner Bros. to helm their adaptation of Ready Player One, it appears he's just one of the filmmakers they had in mind. For the studio also has Peter Jackson, Robert Zemeckis, Edgar Wright and Matthew Vaughn as their top choices for the upcoming film.
This report comes from Ain't It Cool News. Nolan and these directors are the studio's favorites for the film, with Zemeckis apparently being the studio's dream pick. The latter being their favorite primarily because of the movie's references to his work in the '80s.
Ready Player One, based on the New York Times bestseller of the same name by Ernest Cline, takes place in 2044 and centers on a teenage boy who embarks on an elaborate treasure hunt to win a fortune left to him in the will of the creator of Oasis, his favorite virtual reality game. With an adapted script by Zak Penn (The Avengers), it's become one of the studio's hottest priorities, and one the studio seems to have a lot of faith in.
No word on when Warner Bros. aims to start production, but it is feasible any of these directors could do this film. Nolan has his latest, Interstellar, out in theaters and has not announced what his next film will be. Jackson, meanwhile, has just finished up his work in the last Hobbit movie, The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies, which comes into theaters on the 17th. Though he has said in the past he wanted to make The Adventures of Tintin: Prisoners of the Sun next. Meanwhile, Vaughn's latest Kingsman: The Secret Service in theaters February 13, while his company MARV has bought the rights to the YA series ghostgirl, which he plans to produce.
Zemeckis is in post-production on The Walk, his newest film with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, set to hit theaters on October 2, 2015. Wright, no longer directing Ant-Man, has a couple projects to choose from at the moment, including Baby Driver, The Night Stalker and Grasshopper Jungle. It also, as it turns out, is just one tentpole film being handed his way, as he is also on Paramount's short list to take over directing duties on Star Trek 3. Though, one would imagine he would be burned out on big blockbusters after his misfortunes with Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and the aforementioned Ant-Man.
