Famed photographer Peter Lik announced on Tuesday that his Phantom photograph has been sold to a private collector who had a few extra million dollars lying around. The image went for an astonishing $6.5 million.
Lik also sold his masterpieces Illusion and Eternal Moods for $2.4 million and $1.1 million, respectively. The photographer has four of the Top 20 most expensive photos in history. (The fourth spot is for One, which sold for $1 million.)
“The purpose of all my photos is to capture the power of nature and convey it in a way that inspires someone to feel passionate and connected to the image,” Lik said in a statement to PRNewswire.
Phantom is a black and white version of Lik’s Ghost, while Eternal Moods is the B&W version of Eternal Beauty. The pieces highlight the best of Lik’s work, which show off natural beauty of land formations. Typically, his work also shows off vibrant colors, but these B&W versions give attention to unique shapes and light.
According to Lik’s website, the Phantom photo was taken in the Southwest. It shows a beam of light in the middle of a desert canyon.
