Ryan Gosling's directorial debut Lost River hasn't had the nicest road to the cinemas, with its Cannes release universally panned and Warner Bros, its distributor. Now it looks as though it won't be in many theaters at all, for its skipping a theatrical release altogether.
Word on Gosling's movie came from an interview with producer Marc Platt at Collider. They revealed the film was coming out in April, but it was Variety who got the scoop on the movie not being in theaters. Although it is not specified, Lost River likely will go on direct-to-DVD and VOD this upcoming spring.
Starring Eva Mendes, Christina Hendricks, Matt Smith and Saoirse Ronan, Lost River entered the Un Certain Regard field of Cannes this May, to mainly negative reviews. It centers on a single mom who is swept to a dark fantasy world in search of her teenage son. Gosling also wrote the script.
Considering the comparisons it garnered to the works of David Lynch and Harmony Korine, perhaps this video-only release gets Lost River to the right audience as soon as possible.
