While Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 is considered one of the best superhero movies of the past decade, Spider-Man 3 was bashed by critics and fans. Now it turns out that Raimi doesn’t even like the film himself.
Raimi was on The Nerdist this week to discuss his career and took the blame for the villain-stuffed Spider-Man 3.
“I messed up plenty with the third Spider-Man,” Raimi told hosts Chris Hardwick, Matt Mira and Jonah Ray, notes Entertainment Weekly. “Each and every one of those Spider-Man films was pretty damn challenging.”
Raimi said he tried to make the film work, but it “just didn’t work very well.” He said he didn’t “believe” in all of the characters in the film. “If the director doesn’t love something, it’s wrong of them to make it when so many other people love it,” he explained.
He said that just trying to raise the bar after Spider-Man 2 hurt the film. The director wasn’t the only one who hoped to top Spider-Man 2, as it was a general feeling among the crew. But it was the wrong feeling, Raimi said.
“That isn’t a good approach. That went into the thinking of a lot of people who worked on Spider-Man 3, and it was not good for us.”
Paijiba reports that Raimi also talked about other failures. He discussed the issues with Crimewave and didn’t sound too enthused about his last film, Disney’s Oz The Great and Powerful.
