British singer Sam Smith could not have asked for a better Friday. In fact, he couldn't have asked for a better 2014. His amazing year is capped off with six Grammys nominations, which has left him in complete shock.

Smith’s album In The Lonely Hour is up for Album of the Year, a category in which he faces superstars Beyonce, Pharrell Williams, Beck and Ed Sheeran. His soulful “Stay With Me” smash hit is the only song by a male artist up for Record of the Year. The song is also up for Song of the Year.

In total, Smith earned six nominations, tying him with Williams and Beyonce for the most nominations for 2014. Needless to say, he was surprised, despite the amazing commercial success of his album and single.

Fans could track Smith's reaction to each nomination as they came in on Twitter. “5 GRAMMY NOMINATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What is happening??” he wrote at one point.

After the Album of the Year nominations were announced, he wrote on Instagram, “WHAT IS GOING ON!! 6 GRAMMY NOMINATIONS. Dear Lord. This picture sums up perfectly how I feel right now lol Thank you to the academy for this. This is outrageously incredible!!!!”

In an interview with BBC Breakfast, he said that the nominations were a “dream come true,” but left him “emotionally drained.”

Smith is also up for Best New Artist, Best Pop Solo Performance for “Stay With Me,” and Best Pop Vocal Album for In The Lonely Hour. He’ll find out if he wins any of his Grammy nominations on Feb. 8.
