Officials in Scotland have confirmed that a healthcare worker, who recently returned from West Africa, has contracted the deadly Ebola virus.
The Associated Press reported that the worker returned from Sierra Leone on Sunday, was placed in isolation and is being treated at the Brownlee Unit for Infectious Diseases at Gartnavel in Glasgow.
Hospital officials said the infectious disease protocol is in effect.
"Our health service has the expertise and facilities to ensure that confirmed
Ebola cases such as this are contained and isolated effectively minimizing any potential spread of the disease," said First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.
BBC noted that sources have said the infected party is a female aid worker, who will be transferred to an isolation unit in London shortly.
More than 20,000 cases of Ebola have been reported since the deadliest outbreak in history began several months ago. The virus has claimed the lives of around 7,800 people. Most of the deaths have occurred in the West African nations of Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea. Only five other countries have had reported cases.
