Ewan McGregor has played everyone from Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars prequels to Curt Wild in Velvet Goldmine, but his latest role may be one of his biggest yet. The Scottish actor will soon be seen as Jesus Christ himself in Last Days in the Desert, and the first look at McGregor as the prophet has been released.
The photo, from Collider, doesn't tell us too much, but it does give moviegoers an idea of what McGregor looks like as the Catholic figure. In addition to playing Jesus, McGregor also plays Satan, but no pictures are available as to what his appearance as the Dark Prince will entail.
Directed by Rodrigo Garcia (Albert Nobbs), the plot synopsis describes Last Days in the Desert as "an imagined chapter from his forty days of fasting and praying in the desert," where Jesus, out in the wilderness, struggles with the Devil's temptations over the fate of a family in crisis, in what becomes something of a dramatic test. The film also stars Ciaran Hinds and Tye Sheridan.
As it was announced yesterday, Last Days in the Desert will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival next month. Worth noting is that the film's cinematography comes from Emmanuel Lubezki, who won an Oscar for Gravity this year and may very well win another for his work in Birdman this February.
