Side Show, the cult favorite musical about real-life conjoined twins, will be closing early on Broadway, just like the original production 16 years ago.
Producers said today that the final performance of the retooled revival of the 1997 musical will end its run at the St. James Theater on Jan. 4, reports Entertainment Weekly. The revival featured new direction from Dreamgirls director Bill Condon and around 60 percent new material from composers Henry Krieger and Bill Russell.
Side Show centers on the story of Daisy and Violet Hilton, conjoined twins who struggled to find love. Emily Padgett and Erin Davie played the sisters, while David St. Louis, Matthew Hydzik and Ryan Silverman co-starred.
According to the New York Times, the 1997 run lasted only 122 performances, failing to draw audiences despite critical praise. This most recent run was also liked by critics and producers are currently in talks to take it to London.
While Side Show is closing early, Padgett and Davie performed “I Will Never Leave You” on the Today Show this morning.
