The Sony Pictures hacking scandal just got worse. While it was already known that thousands of employees’ personal information was leaked, their medical information was made public as well. This comes just as the studio prepares to launch The Interview.
Among the emails leaked was one from a human resources executive written to Sony’s committee on employee benefits. According to Bloomberg, the email is abotu a particular employee’s plea for help after the employee’s child received a diagnosis that needed special treatment not covered by an insurance company.
Another leaked document was a spreadsheet that listed 34 Sony employees’ names, their spouses and their children who face high medical costs. Names are included, as are dates of birth and even specific health conditions.
These documents follow the embarrassing chain of messages between Sony Pictures co-chairman Amy Pascal, producer Scott Rudin and other executives. Both Pascal and Rudin had to apologize publicly for comments made about President Barack Obama.
While all this is going on, Sony is trying to mount a promotional campaign for The Interview, the Seth Rogen/James Franco comedy about a plot to assassinate the leader of North Korea. Interviews were not allowed at the film’s Los Angeles premiere last night. However, The Hollywood Reporter notes that Rogen, the film’s co-director, said, “I'd like to thank Amy Pascal for having the balls to make this movie.”
Sony only allowed still photographers at the event. The film isn’t being released in Asia and hits theaters in the U.S. on Christmas Day.
