Stephen Hawking predicts dire consequences of higher-intelligence AI.
Hawking, a professor and famous theoretical physicist, told BBC News that a more complete artificial intelligence could finish humanity. He joins Elon Musk, the chief executive of the company Space X, in voicing potential concerns about AI.
Hawking said that the AI that had been created currently has been helpful, according to BBC News, but a more highly intelligent AI could eventually sustain itself. That type of AI could also adapt and evolve much faster than humans and their biology.
The Independent reported that Hawking’s discussion on AI came after he was asked about a new system implemented in the computer that aided in Hawking’s speech. The technology allows the computer to predict the words he would say. Hawking had also written an article for the publication with top scientists in May about the potential threat of AI.
BBC News also reported that Hawking discussed his own opinions about the internet. He said that in regards to the web aiding terrorism, the internet companies should do more to fight against them without infringing on and respecting people’s privacy and rights.
