A slew of celebrities are releasing new films this week. Many of them are not headlining the new releases but rather starring alongside other big named stars. Among them are Ryan Reynolds, James Franco, Joaquin Phoenix, Reese Witherspoon, Christian Bale and Chris Rock.
A movie star reflects on his former comedy career in Top Five. The one hour and forty-one minute comedy pokes fun at show business, music and politics. The limited released film stars Chris Rock, Rosario Dawson, J.B. Smoove, Kevin Hart, Cedric the Entertainer and Tracy Morgan. It’s rated R for sex, nudity, language and drugs.
The story of Moses is told in Exodus: Gods and Kings. The biblical leader helped free 400,000 slaves from Pharaoh Ramses. During their journey from Egypt, they were faced with fatal plagues. The PG-13 drama stars Christian Bale, Joel Edgerton, John Tuturro, Sigourney Weaver, Aaron Paul and Ben Kingsley. It runs for two hours and twenty-two minutes.
A man quickly runs into a diner and finds his daughter missing when he returns to the car in The Captive. The abduction causes strain in his marriage as his wife begins to believe that he is the one that took her. Hell bent on finding the kidnapper, he does all in his power to get her back. Ryan Reynolds, Rosario Dawson, Ryan Reynolds, Scott Speedman and Mireille Enos star in the limited released thriller. The one hour and fifty-two minute film is rated R for language and violence.
The life of Pulitzer Prize-winning poet C.K. Williams is portrayed in The Color of Time. The limited released drama showcases his private family life and the troubles of his past that had a major impact on him through his poetry. The one hour and twelve minute film was directed by twelve different film class students. It stars James Franco, Mila Kunis, Zach Braff, Jessica Chastain and Bruce Campbell. It’s rated R for sex, nudity, language and drugs.
A private eye takes on a case for his ex-girlfriend in Inherent Vice. Set in the late 60’s, the detective investigates a plot to kidnap his ex’s married, billionaire boyfriend. The two hour and twenty-eight minute drama is based on Thomas Pynchon’s novel and features a star-studded cast consisting of Joaquin Phoenix, Reese Witherspoon, Jena Malone, Benicio del Toro, Owen Wilson and Eric Roberts. The limited released film is rated R for drugs, sex, nudity, language and violence. It expands to wide release on January 9.
A family man with financial trouble goes to extreme measures to keep his family stable in After the Fall. After losing his job, and with nothing else left to pawn, he turns to robbery and other crimes as a means to get money. Wes Bentley stars in the limited released drama. The one hour and fifty minute film is rated R for language and sex.
Get a look at the man behind legendary film Citizen Kane with Magician: The Astonishing Life and Work of Orson Welles. The one hour and thirty-four minute documentary showcases a little known side of the actor/director through documentary footage and interviews. Welles shot up to fame in the 1930’s as a radio and then movie star. Following the success of Citizen Kane, he continued to work in the film industry, but with little to no funding. The PG-13 biopic is available in limited theaters.
