Favorite characters and stories make their way back into theaters this week with the release of sequels and a remake. One of them is the final film installment of J. R. R. Tolkien's novel.
The legend of Bilbo Baggins comes to an end with The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. When the Orcs and the dragon Smaug threaten the livelihood of the people of Lake-town, the Men, Dwarves and Elves must join forces if they want a chance at survival. The PG-13 fantasy adventure is written and directed by Peter Jackson and stars Ian McKellen, Cate Blanchett, Martin Freeman, Stephen Fry, Evangeline Lilly Orlando Bloom and Benedict Cumberbatch. It’s playing in conventional, 3D and IMAX theaters for two hours and twenty-four minutes.

History comes to life once again in Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb. The discovery of a secret power’s origin brings the gang from the Museum of Natural History to England to meet some of the country’s own historical figures. The family adventure stars Ben Stiller, Ben Kingsley, Steve Coogan, Owen Wilson, Ricky Gervais, Rebel Wilson, Dan Stevens,Dick Van Dyke and the late Robin Williams. The PG film plays for one hour and thirty-seven minutes.

A rich, mayoral candidate saves a foster child from an oncoming car in Annie. The politician uses the girl and the situation to help improve his image and votes. What starts out to be a campaign booster, ends up changing the lives of both the young orphan and the tycoon. This remake of the classic Broadway show stars Quvenzhané Wallis, Jamie Foxx, Cameron Diaz, Bobby Cannavale and Rose Byrne. The PG family comedy plays for one hour and fifty-eight minutes.

A man is blindsided by his wife’s request for a divorce in Goodbye to All That. The newly single dad searches for love while relishing in the changes to the dating scene with one night stands and internet relationships. The one hour and twenty-seven minute comedic drama is available in limited theaters.

The animated film Song of the Sea is based on the Irish/Scottish legend of Selkies, women who live in the sea as seals. In the PG fantasy film, a brother and sister travel through a magical world to get back to their home by the water. It’s playing in limited theaters for one hour and thirty-three minutes.

The life of famous British painter J.M.W. Turner is showcased in Mr. Turner. Both loved and hated, the 18th century artist’s unconventional technique and perspective changed the way people look at art. The two hour and thirty minute film is available in limited theaters. It’s rated R for sex.

A young detective becomes the target for a serial killer in Poker Night. In order to escape the wrath of the crazed man, he reflects on the stories told during poker games with his coworkers. The unrated, limited released thriller runs for one hour and forty-five minutes.

Just like Annie this week, another musical, Into the Woods, hits the big screen next week. Among the other films entering theaters in time for Christmas are Mark Wahlberg’s The Gambler and Bradley Cooper’s latest American Sniper.
