Leading men are the big draw at theaters this Christmas with new films from Bradley Cooper, Mark Wahlberg, Johnny Depp and Chris Pine. Additionally, this week is also a first peek at Golden Globe nominated films, as many critically acclaimed dramas enter the race in limited release. Also, despite pulling the plug on its release, Sony has put their controversial comedy back in the box office mix with a limited release debut.

A celebrity tabloid reporter and his producer head to North Korea to interview their fan, the country’s leader, Kim Jong-un in The Interview. When the CIA finds out their plan, the agency calls on them to assassinate the ruler. The now infamous comedy starring Seth Rogen and James Franco is available in limited theaters. The one hour and fifty-two minute film is rated R for language, nudity, drugs and violence.

Some of the most popular fairytales come together in Into the Woods. Weaving them all together, the musical is a modern take on such classics as Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk and Rapunzel. The star-studded cast includes Meryl Streep, Johnny Depp, Chris Pine, Anna Kendrick and Emily Blunt. The PG family film is directed by Rob Marshall and plays for two hours and four minutes.

A man lives a double life as an English professor by day and a high stakes gambler at night in The Gambler. He takes a big risk when he puts his life on the line to borrow money from a gangster. In huge debt, his life becomes intertwined with the gangster, a gambling ring operator, a loan shark, his rich mother and his student love interest. Mark Wahlberg, Jessica Lange, John Goodman and Brie Larson star in the one hour and fifty-one minute drama. It’s rated R for language, sex and nudity.

An Olympic runner becomes a World War II prisoner of war in Unbroken. The two hour and seventeen minute drama is based on the true story of Louis "Louie" Zamperini. Stranded on a raft for forty-seven days after a plane crash, Zamperini and two others are found by the Japanese navy and taken to their camp where they are tortured. The PG-13 biopic is directed by Angelina Jolie.

A legendary Navy Seal struggles with everyday life as a father and husband while still feeling the effects of his time at war in American Sniper. His morals are put to the test when he sees children carrying destructive weapons. No matter which decision he chooses, each has ramifications. Bradley Cooper and Sienna Miller star in the Clint Eastwood directed film. The two hour and twelve minute drama is playing in limited theaters but expands to wide release on January 16. It’s rated R for violence, language and sex.

Martin Luther King Jr.’s three month journey to secure equal rights for all is portrayed in Selma. Despite violent resistance, Martin Luther King Jr. and a legion of people made the trek from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. The march was a pivotal moment in U.S. history, ending with the signing of the Voting Act of 1965 which had a major impact on the civil rights movement. The PG-13 drama is a Golden Globe nominee for Best Picture. It stars Tim Roth, Tom Wilkinson, Giovanni Ribisi, Martin Sheen, Oprah Winfrey, Alessandro Nivola, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Common. The limited released film runs for two hours and eight minutes. It expands to wide release on January 9.

The true story of the artist behind the popular 1950’s and 1960’s paintings of waifs with large eyes is told in Big Eyes. Margaret Keane is the one responsible for the works of art but her husband took all of the credit. The one hour and forty-six minute biopic shows her emotional and financial struggle to regain ownership and acknowledgement of her work. Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz received Golden Globe nominations for their starring roles in the Tim Burton directed drama. The PG-13 film is available in limited theaters.

A woman on the verge of losing her job must convince her coworkers to give up their bonus in order for her to stay employed in Two Days, One Night. With only one weekend to make it happen, she ventures out on the road with her husband to persuade her colleagues. The limited released French drama is subtitled in English. The PG-13 film stars Marion Cotillard. It plays for one hour and thirty-five minutes.

With all of the critically acclaimed films out this week, next week there’s something a little different. The horror film The Woman in Black 2 makes its way into theaters on January 2.
