Bradley Cooper and Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper reached a major milestone at the box office this weekend, but the big story was just how terribly Johnny Depp’s latest film did. Overall, the trio of new wide releases had terrible weekends, but at least one didn’t do as poorly as the others.
Sniper, which is up for six Oscars, took in $64.4 million in its second weekend of wide release, proving that there certainly is no such thing as bad publicity. The film’s total now stands at $200.1 million, according to Rentrak data.
Internationally, the film has done surprisingly well, adding $17.6 million in foreign territories. It has now made $47.5 million in total overseas.
The No. 2 slot was held by one of the new releases, Jennifer Lopez’s low-budget thriller The Boy Next Door, released by Universal and produced by Jason Blum. It was released in over 2,600 theaters and scored $15 million. That reaches the high end of some expectations.
The rest of the Top 5 features Paddington ($12.4 million); The Wedding Ringer ($11.6 million); and Taken 3 ($7.1 million).
Mortdecai, the latest film starring Johnny Depp as an eccentric character, wasn’t expected to do well. And it has continued his streak of flops. Despite being in more theaters than Boy Next Door, it only made $4.1 million.
Lastly, George Lucas’ animated musical Strange Magic did make more than Mortdecai, with $5.5 million. However, Disney released it in a whopping 3,020 theaters, so this is one of the worst openings for a film with that wide a release.
It’s also worth noting that The Imitation Game continues to be a hit with audiences, reeling in another $7.1 million. The eight-time Oscar nominee is up to $60.6 million.
