Avatar was released back in 2009 and fans will have to wait even longer to the sequels debut on the big screen. James Cameron, director of Avatar, will be pushing back the first sequel to 2017.

AP reported that the push back is a result of the complexity of writing the scripts. Cameron will be writing and directing three Avatar sequels which will be in production all at the same time.
"There’s a layer of complexity in getting the story to work as a saga across three films that you don’t get when you’re making a stand-alone film,” said Cameron. “We’re writing three simultaneously. And we’ve done that so that everything tracks throughout the three films."
The director went on to explain that it wouldn't be possible to write one film and build off of it in the sequels. It had to be an entire storyline running throughout.
Entertainment Weekly added that the first Avatar sequel was set to come out in 2016 and Cameron had announced that early last year.
