Law enforcement officials killed two suspects in Belgium during a counter-terrorism operation on Thursday.

The Associated Press noted that the suspects, who authorities believe had ties to Syria, were killed during a gun battle with police in Verviers and a third person was taken into custody. None of the officers or any civilians were harmed.

BBC News reported that federal prosecutor Eric Van der Sypt said that the suspects initially opened fire on the armed police officers.

"The suspects immediately and for several minutes opened fire with military weaponry and handguns on the special units of the federal police before they were neutralized," he said.

Van der Sypt added that elsewhere in Belgium, another anti-terrorist operation was being conducted in the capital city of Brussels.

Officials said that the suspects killed had been plotting an attack against police buildings in the region. They have not yet said if any such attack can be linked to the recent French attacks.

Terror threat levels have been heightened all over Europe since the massacre that left 17 people dead including 12 at the Parisian Charlie Hedbo offices.
