After nearly six weeks, the search for a missing West Chester University student has come to a tragic end.
NBC Philadelphia reported that on Saturday, the parents of Shane Montgomery confirmed that a body pulled from the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia is their son.
"Today we have done what we promised," Shane's mother, Karen Montgomery said in a statement. "We found and brought Shane home."
As FOX 29 noted, the 21-year-old was last seen leaving a bar in the city’s Manayunk section on Nov. 27. Surveillance video showed Montgomery leaving the pub alone around 1:45 a.m. before he vanished.
Several volunteers joined in the search efforts, but their hope turned bleak after divers recovered his keys in the river last month.
Despite the family’s confirmation, police have not yet positively identified the body and will not have an exact cause of death until an autopsy is performed.
Montgomery, who celebrated his birthday with friends the night he went missing, was a senior at WCU.
