Early box office numbers for American Sniper were huge, but the final number for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday has surpassed $107 million.
After the first three days of the weekend, the film was estimated to have made $90.2 million, added on to its $3.4 million limited release. Initial estimates for the four-day weekend predicted $105.3 million, notes Variety.
However, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed today that the final four-day total is $107.3 million. On Martin Luther King Jr. Day alone, the film made $17.8 million.
It’s now the biggest film of clint Eastwood’s career as a director and Bradley Cooper’s biggest film so far. The final three-day opening numbers - adjusted down to $89.5 million - is just below The Matrix: Reloaded’s record $91.8 million opening for an R-rated movie.
Sniper stars Cooper as the late Navy SEAL Chris Kyle and was nominated for six Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actor. It has earned an A CinemaScore grade from audiences.
The film’s domestic total now stands at $110.8 million, easily making it the top-grossing 2014 Best Picture nominee. Zero Dark Thirty, another real-life modern war drama, grossed just $95.7 million during its entire run.
