Brian Wilson, one of the founding members of the Beach Boys, will be releasing a new solo album in April, his first made up of original material since 2008.
No Pier Pressure will be released on April 7 in two different CD editions. One will feature 13 tracks, while a deluxe version will include three extra songs. The double-LP edition will include all 16 songs.
Wilson co-produced the album with Joe Thomas after they reunited for The Beach Boys’ 2012 album That’s Why God Made The Radio. He also enlisted a group of famous friends to guest star on the record, including Kacey Musgraves; She & Him duo Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward; Nate Ruess of fun.; Capital Cities’ Sebu Simonian and trumpeter Mark Isham. Former Beach Boys members Al Jardine, David Marks and Blondie Chaplin also appear on the record.
For Beach Boys fans paying attention to Wilson’s recent solo ventures, it will be surprising who isn’t on the album. Back in August 2013, Wilson said he was recording with legendary guitarist Jeff Beck, but none of those songs made it. He also told Rolling Stone that he worked with Frank Ocean, but it doesn’t appear that Ocean's voice will be heard on the album. In addition, Wilson said he worked with Lana Del Rey on a song called “The Last Song,” which did make the album, but without Del Rey.
No Pier Pressure is Wilson’s first solo album of original material since 2008’s That Lucky Old Sun. In the meantime, he did record George Gershwin and Disney cover albums.
