Dan Aykroyd, who has spent the last few years only talking about making a Ghostbusters 3, is glad to see it finally happen, even if he’s not going to star in it. He said this week that he gives a thumbs up to the women Paul Feig has cast as the new Ghostbusters team.
Back on Tuesday, director Feig confirmed that he’s picked Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig and current Saturday Night Live castmembers Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon for the movie. Later, Sony confirmed that the new movie will hit theaters on July 22, 2016, 32 years after the original film opened.
“The Aykroyd family is delighted by this inheritance of the Ghostbusters torch by these most magnificent women in comedy,” Aykroyd said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “My great grandfather, Dr. Sam Aykroyd, the original Ghostbuster, was a man who empowered women in his day, and this is a beautiful development in the legacy of our family business.”
Aykroyd co-wrote the original film and was set to star in the third Ghostbusters, until Sony decided to reboot it with an all-female team. Ivan Reitman was also going to return to direct, but decided not to after Harold Ramis died. Still, Reitman is going to be a co-producer on the new project.
