Dan Akroyd announced his support of the all-female lead cast for the upcoming Ghostbusters movie.

Akroyd, one of the stars and co-writers of the original Ghostbusters films, told The Hollywood Reporter that his family is happy to see the new female leads take the keys to the franchise.

"The Aykroyd family is delighted by this inheritance of the Ghostbusters torch by these most magnificent women in comedy." Akroyd said.

According to ABC News, Akroyd mentioned in his statement that the casting of women in the lead roles continues the work of his great grandfather.

"My great grandfather, Dr. Sam Aykroyd, the original Ghostbuster, was a man who empowered women in his day, and this is a beautiful development in the legacy of our family business.”

It was announced Tuesday that Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon would star in the next installment of the franchise.

The female-led Ghostbusters movie is set to open on July 22, 2016.
