The retrieval of the black boxes from AirAsia Flight 8501 has been prevented due to bad conditions for divers.

The Associated Press reported that because of strong currents, divers have not been able to recover the boxes, which are important to the investigation of why the doomed flight disappeared and crashed.

National Search and Rescue chief Henry Bambang Soelistyo said that on Thursday, divers attempted to locate the black boxes but the currents proved to be too much for them. Visibility was also an issue.

The boxes are believed to still be in the tail of the jet.

As previously reported, wreckage from the aircraft was discovered last week off the coast of Indonesia in the Karimata Strait.

The aircraft vanished after the pilot requested to change course due to weather conditions, however, he was not given permission to do so because of heavy air traffic.

The plane was carrying 162 passengers and was flying from Surabaya en route to Singapore.
