Duke released junior guard Rasheed Sulaimon from its men’s basketball team on Thursday.
The release comes after Sulaimon couldn’t meet the obligations of the program. He is in good academic standing and will be finishing the spring semester, according to USA Today. Sulaimon was a top-60 recruit out of high school and was considered to be a possible first-round pick. He could try to transfer or try to go pro, but it’s unknown at this time what he’ll do.
"Rasheed has been unable to consistently live up to the standards required to be a member of our program," Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said in a statement. "It is a privilege to represent Duke University and with that privilege comes the responsibility to conduct oneself in a certain manner. After Rasheed repeatedly struggled to meet the necessary obligations, it became apparent that it was time to dismiss him from the program."
Sulaimon’s career has shown promise. He averaged 11.6 points and 3.4 rebounds per game as a freshman in 2012-13. He was also named to the ACC’s All-Freshman team. This season Sulaimon has averaged 7.5 points and two rebounds, according to CBS Sports. He scored three points in twelve minutes of playing time on Wednesday against Notre Dame.
Duke is currently 17-3 and 4-3 in league play. They play Virginia on Saturday and must win to still have a shot at winning the ACC title.
