If there was any concern in the Universal executive offices that Fifty Shades of Grey fever may have cooled a bit, the news from Fandango should cheer them up. The online ticketing site said that it is the fastest-selling R-rated movie in its history.
Fandango didn’t exactly say how many tickets have been sold since they went on sale last Sunday. However, The Hollywood Reporter notes that Fandango also said that Fifty Shades had the best pre-sales week for a non-sequel since 2012’s The Hunger Games. The Jennifer Lawrence movie does still have the overall record for most advance tickets.
Fifty Shades has also sold more advance tickets than other R-rated movies, like Sex and the City 2, the Hangover sequels and Gone Girl.
The film earned an R-rating from the MPAA for “strong sexual content including dialogue, some unusual behavior and graphic nudity.” The “unusual behavior” confused one of the film’s producers and was slammed by the Morality in Media watchdog group.
Fifty Shades opens on Feb. 13, right in time for Valentine’s Day. It stars Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson and is based on E.L. James’ erotic novel. It was directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson.
