Best known in front of the camera for playing Tobias in Arrested Development and an assortment of characters on Mr. Show with Bob and David, comedian David Cross is now switching his talents over to behind the camera. He recently made his directorial debut with the comedy Hits, and its trailer has just hit the web, no pun intended.

Split Sider found the trailer for Cross' new movie, starring Matt Walsh, Michael Cera, Amy Sedaris, Wyatt Cenac and David Koechner, to name a few, Hits made its premiere at last year's Sundance Film Festival, but it just getting around to getting released. The new comedy finds a regular small-town man (Walsh) getting his life turned around when his pot-hole rant in City Hall goes viral, much to the dismay of his fame-seeking daughter.

For years, I have noted how, if there were two actors and/or comedians who should break into filmmaking, it would be Patton Oswalt and Cross. Not only are they both proven to be extremely gifted writers and entertainers, but countless interviews over the years show their supreme knowledge of film and for art. That said, this first look at Cross' movie is a tad disappointing, to say the least.

All the targets in the movie seem too broad and easy, and Cross' wit isn't coming across as strong as it should. Perhaps the final movie will be better, but based on its Rotten Tomatoes score, one shouldn't hope too much.

No word yet on when Hits is getting released, but it's interesting to note this trailer opens with a logo for BitTorrent Bundle instead of a regular distributor. Needless to say, it'll make its way through the site sometime in the near future. The site has been trying to distribute movies for some time, as seen recently by their open-arms request to release The Interview during the period-of-time it didn't have one. Considering Hits subject matter too, it is perhaps all-too-fitting this would be the way the movie is released to the public.
