The Interview is finally coming to Netflix. The controversial comedy that caused a media firestorm at the end of 2014 will be available on the streaming site later this month.
In its quarterly letter to investors, the streaming service announced that the Seth Rogen, James Franco comedy will be available starting on Jan. 24.
This marks the first time that the film will be available on a subscription streaming service, since it’s still not available on Amazon Prime.
Shortly after The Interview was made available for rent or purchase on Google Play, XBox Video and YouTube, Netflix and Sony began talks to get the film on the streaming service. In the meantime, the film grossed an astonishing $40 million just from online sales.
The Interview did get a small theatrical run in independent theaters, grossing $6 million. That’s obviously a lot less than what it would have made if Sony went ahead with a wide release on Christmas Day.
That wide release was scrapped in December after hackers threatened theaters that planned to show the film, as well as the studio itself. After the major theater chains pulled out, Sony said it wouldn’t release the film at all. Following widespread criticism for the move, even from President Obama, the studio went with the online and limited release.
The Interview stars Rogen and Franco as journalists sent to assassinate North Korea’s Kim Jong-Un.
