Kurt Cobain came alive again, at least for a couple of hours, in a theater at the Sundance film Festival in Utah Saturday. Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck, which will air on HBO, earned rave reviews and also brought Courtney Love and her daughter with Cobain, Frances, back together.
Love and Frances, who is an executive producer on the movie, hadn’t been together in a while and a source told The New York Daily News that organizers were even nervous that there would be a blow-up between the two. However, the complete opposite happened, as the two smiled and hugged for the red carpet cameras. Love even tweeted to Frances and the film’s director, Brett Morgen, that Cobain would have been proud of the final film.
While the film earned good reviews and featured interviews with many of those who knew Cobain, Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl was noticeably absent. Morgen told The Hollywood Reporter that Grohl’s interview just wasn’t completed in time to make the Sundance cut of the film.
“We had a locked print and trying to re-edit a film with a new interview in 10 days is kind of difficult,” Morgen explained. “This is the picture I wanted — I didn't want there to be a lot of people in the film. I hope we'll see a version [with the Grohl interview] some time.”
The film does feature interviews with Cobain’s parents, Love and Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic. It also tries to avoid cliched parts of Nirvana mythology, instead exploring Cobain’s personality and his life experiences, notes Rolling Stone.
HBO picked up Montage of Heck in November. It will premiere on May 4.
