Children in one of the countries hardest hit by the Ebola epidemic are finally able to return to school for the first time since July.

NBC News reported that the country is re-opening its 5,000 schools now that the number of confirmed cases are way down.

The World Health Organization said in an update Thursday that the disease is on the decline.

"For the first time since the week ending 29 June 2014, there have been fewer than 100 new confirmed cases reported in a week in the three most-affected countries," WHO said in a statement.

The countries plagued the most since the outbreak began last year have been the West African nations of Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea.

The Wall Street Journal noted that the often-fatal virus is highly contagious and isolated cases were also confirmed in the U.K, U.S., Spain, Mali, Nigeria and Senegal.

More than 22,000 cases in all were reported and the disease claimed the lives of almost 9,000 people.

There is no telling when Ebola will be eradicated, but the decline is certainly positive news.
