Trouble between Lil Wayne and his record label, Cash Money, began publicly stirring in December and now they are headed to court. Lil Wayne is now suing the label for breach of contract.
Weezy claims that the label owes him millions because it has yet to release Tha Carter V. Since they won’t pay, Lil Wayne believes that he should be able to walk out of the contract, reports TMZ.
In addition, Wayne is suing the label, co-founded by Birdman, for $51 million. He also wants a judge to name him a joint copyright owner to all Young Money recordings.
The rapper claims that he is owed an $8 million advance, which was supposed to be paid when he started recording the album, plus another $2 million when he finished it. But he says he never received either payment.
Sources later told TMZ that Wayne would stay with the label if Birdman just agrees to pay him. The hope is that Universal Music Group, which distributes Cash Money, will pay Wayne his $10 million. If they do that, then Wayne would likely have to drop his lawsuit.
In December, Wayne went on a Twitter rant, claiming that he wanted to leave the label and that they were refusing to release Tha Carter V. His manager later said that everything was “good” between the two sides, but that’s clearly not the case.
Last week, Wayne released a mixtape called Sorry 4 The Wait 2, which includes tracks that diss Birdman and Young Money.
