A New York City police officer has turned himself in after allegedly attacking a female Metropolitan Transportation Authority employee on Dec. 23.
WCBS2 reported that Mirjan Lolja, 37, surrendered to authorities when he saw himself in surveillance video on the news.
Police said the off-duty officer had an argument with the 28-year-old MTA worker on the southbound platform of the D Train in the Bronx around 2:30 a.m. He then allegedly grabbed her and placed her in a bear hug before throwing her to the ground and chocking her.
“I’m totally outraged,” Joe Costales, chairman of Transport Workers Union Local 100, told the New York Daily News. “We’re not safe with members of the public and now we’re not safe from the police.”
The victim was transported to a local hospital and treated for minor injuries.
Lolja, who worked for the 25th Precinct in Harlem for about seven years, can be seen fleeing the scene in the surveillance footage.
The Internal Affairs Bureau is now investigating the alleged incident.
