Authorities in New York City are searching for at least two armed robbery suspects that they say shot and wounded two plainclothes police officers.
Reuters reported that officials said the policemen were both shot and injured while responding to a robbery at a Chinese restaurant in the Bronx shortly after 10:30 p.m. Monday.
When the officers approached the suspects they were shot at and returned fire outside the restaurant.
One of the off-duty officers was hit in the arm and lower back while the other was struck in the chest and arm.
Both cops, whose names have not yet been released, were transported to a local hospital and are said to be in stable condition.
New York Magazine noted that Mayor Bill de Blasio spoke about the officers’ bravery during a news conference on Tuesday.
"These officers did something that is extraordinarily brave and they did it as part of their commitment," the New York City mayor said. "They came off their shift. Upon hearing this call, they went back out in search of these criminals."
This police shooting comes after the NYPD said goodbye to Officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos who were allegedly targeted and gunned down while they sat in their patrol car in Brooklyn.
